<description>Ytaelena López, an artist and a chimera trained to live within chaos.

By Valentina Vitols
(ArtVoice Magazine May2009)

Ytaelena López is proud of her fine and tuned senses: she presents herself as a storyteller with a
journalists nose and an artists vision, with hands that can create long shadows and
unforgettable characters and a thick, distinctive accent that has led her to live with no pause in
the art scene in San Francisco.
Born and raised in Caracas, Venezuela, López came to the United States only a few years ago.
Her first stop was Miami. Soon after, her husband Carloss and her own interests in finding a
place where art and technology entwined brought them to San Francisco. I ended up in San
Francisco because I followed what I love. They feel San Francisco is a cosmopolitan place and
very welcoming in terms of diversity. We felt at home from day one, she told me over coffee,
at a popular hangout in the Mission District, where she currently lives at.
Even thought López has a strong technical formation in visual arts (drawing, sculpture and
comics), her background is grounded in literature. She prides herself on the fact that shes a good
storyteller. López says, any story ends up as the reflex of all stories, like Julio Cortázar and
Sherezades stories. Its what in literature is called mise en abyme, or the playing of infinite
mirrors, where I ground most of my work.
López also likes to play with the limits of the politically correct concept. She considers it a bet:
she goes all the way with taking objects out of context, as much as art allows. Galleries can be a
safe haven for this, and, if someone doesnt like it, at least its tolerated because it is in a
gallery. López says. It can also be dangerous; with "The Virtual Afterlife," an installation about
gangs in her neighborhood, she feared for her safety. She wanted to photograph the street altars
built in honor of violence victims, but got scared. She ended upalong the participating
galleryinviting people to write their condolences. More than 1,000 people got involved.
López relies strongly on installations. In preparation for these, she researches the community she
will be working in. Usually, she selects a topic prompted by an impulse, harvesting ideas and
concepts inside herself for several weeks or months. She gets as much information as she can
from the web, from personal interviews, and statistic research. López is always hungry for
understanding. She cant stop at the how, and needs to step into the "why." Maybe it's the
nature of the topics that I pick: unfairness, paradoxes, López says.
Lately, the themes that attract Lópezs attention are related with the concept of barriers:
prejudice, bureaucracy, racism, machismo, violence and impossible aesthetics. All these are
somewhat ignited by the constant movement for one idea to another, as a part of my heritage as
an immigrant, she adds.
In her latest work, López is focusing on making portraits of people living and working in her
neighborhood. Sorrow arises, glasses had been shattered and blood had been spilt, and the viewer
may not know it but will certainly feel it. I need to connect in a really visceral way with the
subject I am painting, López says. However, drama isnt the only cause that makes López to
pick up a brush or a pencil to paint and draw. There is a candid, tender quality in much of her
work as well.
Lópezs visual work epitomizes the solid influence of how living delineates someones features,
those that are visible, and those she brings to the surface with her painting. It doesnt take her
long to reveal the charms and mysteries of those who pose for her. Sometimes, the curves of her
strokes ascend in a whirlwind and she plays with oversaturated colors but, somehow, the
creatures she creates appear poignantly human, natural and compelling. It doesnt matter if her
subject is cynical or has a nefarious nature, or if it is a vaudeville actress or community saint.
López's visual answers to good or evil seem to always reach for sublimity.
It's physical workout and emotional trance. It is why I am so fast drawing; I can do a huge
portrait in less than one hour. This ability is crucial for when López brings her art to public
spaces.
She often brings her drawing and painting skills to the streets, working while people watch her,
and even involving the viewers as collaborators. I was able to see it first hand in THE LIVING
MAP: geotaging the dreams, a multimedia interactive installation on which we worked together
during the February 2009 Mission Arts Performance Project (MAPP)where she is involved as
an organizer. We printed a large map of Latin America, and then placed reproductions of her
portraits of adults and my portraits of children in the countries where these individuals belonged
to or were attached to. Then, she invited viewers to take a piece of paper to write down where
they would want to be in Latin America at that moment. The piece began as a our artwork, and,
by the end of the night, it became the collaboration of a fairly large group of peoplefriends,
acquaintances and strangerstransformed into a map of dreams and remembrance.
Her canvas can easily be seen as a therapists couch, where López becomes a very sophisticated
outliner of the human psyche. López has also used herself as her own best muse. A strong,
feminine presence, she says that whatever she demands from people she does from herself, too.
I use myself to experiment, as I did with La Virgen de la Diversidad, a self- portrait where
López illustrates the difficult position of being part of a minority. The Virgin wears a tiara made
of an image of "successful and multi-ethnic people working in a financial institution in the US,"
representing, according to her, the now broken American Dream.
López's strokes are a force of nature. The character coming out of her hands can knock you over;
even the subtle becomes the strongest feature in her artwork. When I asked her how she defines
her work, she says A sugarcoated piece of sharp metal that hits you directly in your most inner
emotions. She pauses and adds even though someone once told me I was pretty much doing
pink porno.
Despite classifications and the feel her work exudes, López has immense control and a surprising
physical and stylistic range. She can easily to jump from a full-body portrait drawn with pastels,
to a close-up of her husband to a large piece where a nude woman is drawn with a blue ballpoint,
all with ease and grace. Her pieces are all different but like a large group of siblings, the viewer
will always be able to tell who the artist is. Even so, theres no repetition or cloning or evenness.
Lópezs unmistakable style ties everything together.
At the end, Im a voyeur of people and their emotions, López says.

<description>My work uses science and mass media as metaphor for our emotions about the inner chaos of our world. I aim to reflect the isolation of those who may be ignored or shy but still want to be seen. The beauty is there, waiting for be discovered, but we don't see it because we cannot shed our prejudices.

I see life as a big playground. That is why my installations usually depart from a question crafted to evoke both a visceral response and emotional dissonance. Using this query as premise, I build large interactive objects for people to transit through, and then linguistically appropriate it, by leaving their own words behind.

Art is a way to connect with the world as an intelectual exercise. My journalistic background allows me to explore even the most obnoxious situations and discover an untold history or astonishing image. Sometimes I get my epiphanies from the kitsch, because that’s where the wisdom of the street is. I use my artistic practice to to shape our perception about reality, using the objects of our desires to focus the attention in what is relevant, but we would prefer not to be aware of. That is why I feel attracted to conceptual ambiguities, aesthetic paradoxes and dark irony.

My work is feminine, but not necessary glamorous. It is something raw, mischievous but kind... sardonic laughter and a bit of smeared lipstick. Through that glass I explore topics like biology, science, ecology and social landscaping of consumption symbols, violence and prejudices.</description>

Growing Hopes I from Ytaelena Lopez on Vimeo.

Our future lies in our children, so what we are leaving them as legacy? It depends on the decisions we make now, and frankly we are not doing very well…

This multimedia interactive installation is about how adults imagine the future for their little ones. The trees are a metaphor for life, attached to the past, growing toward the future. The "dancing trees" lay in a bed of clouds (made of cotton). A set of interviews of children talking about the future are projected on the floor. Visitors have the opportunity to participate, writing their own visions about the future among the foliage of the trees (painted in black board).

The future is defined by its disagreements with the past about what is and is not important. What it's hopeful about, what it fears. Everything else is just fashion.

So, the question is:

So, what kind of world do you want to leave to your child in the future?

WHAT DO YOU THING THE FUTURE WILL BE LIKE?
WHAT SCARE YOU ABOUT THE FUTURE?

TO SEE THE LIGHT is a interactive open installation inspired by the concept of “illumination” as epiphany in two senses: as a spiritual revelation (inside to outside) and inspiration (outside to inside).

The people have the opportunity to interact with the space by writing down their enlightment experiences or epiphanies and sharing their wisdom in our “Espacio Sacro”.
We want to create a space that allows people to connect to their spiritual side and achieve their own enlightenment.

HOW TO INTERACT:

1- Try to answer one of the following question:

When did you see the light? When it was your latest AHA moment? What did you learn?
When it was the last time that someone change your mind about something important?
¿Cuándo vistes la luz? ¿Qué aprendistes?

2- Take one of the tags and write your answer.

3- Go inside the space
Listen to the voice...
Find your Light...
Contemplate...
Take your time...

4- Hang your tag inside if you like.

5- Leave in PEACE, the LIGHT is already inside you.
